Cabot Sheathing Board

Description

Cabot Gypsum Sheathing Board is a moisture-resistant exterior wall sheathing designed for use behind cladding such as vinyl siding and brick or masonry veneer. Its non-combustible, dimensionally stable gypsum core is enhanced with a wax emulsion for superior moisture resistance. This core is encased in dark brown face paper and brown back paper, both made from 100% recycled material, creating a durable barrier that also provides wind and sound resistance.

While Cabot Gypsum Sheathing Board reinforces framing and helps mitigate lateral forces from wind and vibration, it is not intended for structural sheathing. Manufactured in both a 1/2" regular core and a 5/8" Type X core, it meets ASTM C 1396 standards and is suitable for noncombustible construction.

Cabot Gypsum Sheathing Board can be used in EIFS (Exterior Insulation and Finish Systems) applications when specified by an EIFS manufacturer. Additionally, it serves as a thermal barrier when incorporated into certain roofing applications.

Lightweight and easy to handle, Cabot Gypsum Sheathing Board can be installed by a single person using the efficient score-and-snap method, making it a cost-effective alternative to plywood or wood fiber sheathing.

  • Exterior cladding is to be fastened through the sheathing and into the wall framing with mechanical fasteners.
  • Not recommended for exterior ceilings or soffits.
  • Not recommended for use were long term exposure is an issue. A one month      exposure time with unprotected board cannot be exceeded. Exposure for      longer periods, material must be covered at the time of erection with a      building felt or equal. The joints must be lapped and adequately fastened.

Application

Cabot Gypsum Sheathing Board can be secured to wood framing using 1 3/4" (44 mm) galvanized roofing nails or 1 1/4" (32 mm) Type W bugle head corrosion-resistant screws. For steel studs, fastening can be done with 1" (25 mm) Type S corrosion-resistant screws, and special adhesives may be used alongside supplemental fasteners for added stability.

All joints should be loosely butted, with ends fully supported by framing and end joints staggered to enhance structural integrity. Cabot Sheathing can be installed either horizontally or vertically, with a maximum spacing of 24" (610 mm) on center. Installation must follow the applicable standards for proper performance.

  • ASTM C 1280 Application of Gypsum Sheathing Board.
  • CAN/CSA-A 82.31 Gypsum Board Application.
